Feathers and Wedges
If you have  seen a raw block of stone from a quarry, you may have noticed those curious looking parallel lines. The way stone has been cut for millenia has not changed very much. We still use  tools called feathers and wedges to cut stone into smaller blocks. Below are some pictures showing the p... [more]

Jay received a commission to work on a sculptural piece to honor the memory of their mother.  It is a piece inspired by the artwork of an artist the family has known and whose figures evoke a dreamy quality. The work Jay will be doing is a bird bath being held up by a mysterious figure in a flowin... [more]

Tree
Jay received a commission for a live oak tree. Starting with a cube of African Green Marble, he rounds off the edges to begin shaping the tree top. The stone is very hard and dense which has led to very slow progress.  As the tree top is shaped, Jay works the trunk to nearly its final diameter a... [more]
Pregnant Torso

Ingrid started this limestone piece as a test at a demonstration/fair in Winfield. It has evolved into a form that resembles a splash of water or a wave forming in the ocean. It is made out of Silverdale limestone and stands about 18 inches tall.  ... [more]
Tellers
This is a new series of paintings inspired by the restaurant "Tellers" where we spend a lot of Saturday evenings. I am working in a looser style, where the brushstrokes are more pronounced and the figures are less detailed. One of the paintings is called "Inner Space" and depicts a coupl... [more]
Guardians of Paradise
The newest work in progress for Ingrid hails back to the colonial houses typical of Nicaraguan towns. The house here represents paradise being guarded by totemic idols. The idols come from the island of Ometepe. They are known as Alter-Egos, and generally depict a human figure carrying (or in some c... [more]

Griffin in Green Marble
The sculpture formerly known as a bowhead whale is slowly evolving into a griffin-like grotesque. These mythological beasts had birds heads, lions bodies, wings, and tails.  The body of the griffin is slowly being carved out of the stone. The bird's beak is based on a pre-historic raptor.  Below,... [more]
Old Victorian Houses
Even old houses can sit in for a portrait. The basis for these paintings were old abandoned farm houses in eastern Kansas. Slowly, layer upon layer, the house and gardens are coming to life!                  Progress being made starts to show in the pictures below:            ... [more]
Is it a Gargoyle?
The general misunderstanding is whether a grotesque is really a gargoyle, or whether all gargoyles are grotesques.   In essence, the idea of a gargoyle was to provide old cathedrals and other buildings with a way of moving rain water away from building walls and foundations. They were the downspou... [more]
